The Milni ceremony is a traditional pre-wedding ritual in Sikh and Indian weddings where the bride’s family formally welcomes the groom’s family. It symbolizes the unification of the two families and includes the exchange of garlands and blessings. Taking place before the main wedding ceremony, Milni sets a tone of harmony, respect, and togetherness for the celebration ahead.
The Anand Karaj, the Sikh marriage ceremony, revolves around the four lavan—hymns composed by Guru Ram Das—that are recited as the couple circles the Guru Granth Sahib. Each lavan marks a stage in the couple’s spiritual and marital journey, ultimately leading to union with the Divine.
Immediately following the Anand Karaj, guests will be invited to join us for langar, a traditional communal meal, which will be served at the Gurdwara.
For the Indian ceremony, we encourage festive traditional attire. Ladies may consider wearing a saree or lehenga choli, and men may consider a kurta pajama. If you’re looking for inspiration, please feel free to explore our Pinterest board and visit the recommended websites linked below for ideas and shopping resources.
In honor of tradition during the Indian ceremony, red is reserved for the bride and groom. We respectfully ask guests to choose other colors when selecting their attire.
If you prefer a more Western-style outfit, feel free to wear one. Vibrant colors are highly encouraged; Please avoid black or white, as they are associated with mourning in Indian culture.
Important: In a Gurdwara (a Sikh temple), covering your hair is a sign of respect and humility. Both men and women are required to cover their heads while inside. Men typically use a handkerchief, scarf, or turban, while women wear a scarf, dupatta, or shawl. You will also be required to remove your shoes when entering the Gurdwara.
The party continues! Following the Anand Karaj, we invite you to Bhangra After Dark for a night of music, dancing, and fun. Guests are encouraged to stay in their Indian attire to fully embrace the celebration. Come hungry, come ready to dance, and come ready to celebrate with us in true Indian wedding style.
While buses will transport guests from the Gurdwara in Barcelona back to Sitges (after the Anand Karaj), transportation will not be provided to the reception. The reception venue is centrally located in Sitges and within walking distance of many hotels, with taxis and rideshare services available.
